Usage note
This is the standard, everyday Vietnamese term for a physical earthquake — conversational speech, general news, and ordinary references to real ground shaking.
Figurative “shockwaves” (political, social, cultural) almost always use địa chấn instead (e.g. cơn địa chấn chính trị). Using động đất that way is uncommon and can sound off in formal writing.
